noticed that japan and canada are indeed very similiar, save one detail; japan is fuckered.

take note:

- pairs of crustless pieces of bread packaged for your sandwich needs.
- enjoy the taste of yogurt, with aloe.
- garbage days are taken very seriously. there is combustible garbage day, then there`s reclyclable metal and type='text'>to the tuts' of the world

today is my birthday.
today i am 24 years old.

and you know, i usually have some mild break down slash panic attack over getting older. feeling desperate and anxious to squeeze the remaining juice out of my fleeting youth but i simply havent felt that this year. probably because im much happier. yah, im happy and happy is way better than content.

so to celebrate, nathan and i held our annual birthday party chez nous. there were bunches of people all crammed into our teeny apartment and featured special guest kara wong whom i havent seen since paul and were wed a year and a half ago. twat fun! she is such a lovely woman, that kara wong. tomorrow i'm headed to gabriola island to meet with her and omer for a weekend of loafing and relaxing.

yessssss

in other news, i tastefully resigned from felicita's yesterday. ive only been back at it for a week since my trip but i really truly and simply cant stand it any longer. normally i would simply grin and bear it -- the shitty coworkers and their shitty standards, the antsy customers and drunken fucktards, but at this point: fuck it. hopefully as a bachelorette of science in the faculty of humanities i will be very employable and will never have to wait on another table for the rest of my days.

if there's one thing linguistics didnt teach me, it's how to use a colon properly.

it's okay, im only 24. pleeeeenty of time to figure that one out.

i was going to write another post about peru since my previous post was lousy and left much to be desired but i think i'll wait until i upload my photos and have something to show for it. needless to say, my time in peru will be among the most memorable of my life. the people are of the warmest, most welcoming and friendly i have ever encountered. the landscapes and diversity of ecosystems is incredible and soooo beautiful. i could never do it justice to describe my time there, you really must experience it for yourself and i highly recommend you do. i give it four stars, way up.

awesomely yours,
laura

ps/ i think it's time to bring back "tuts" no? were hard on each other at times but i hope you're proud of what we've accomplished, even if this year has been a bit of a bust. dont blame yourself, because really, i was the neglectful one. yah it would have been nice to end with a bang; like my good friend neil once said, "it's better to burn out than to fade away". while it's meant sacrificing some scholastic success, we can both agree this has been the happiest and healthiest year we've shared together. we've had some good times, you and i. i hope you look back on them like i will -- with smiles and chortles and the occasional "oh type='text'>hello mosquito.

it's been so long now that i barely know where to begin.

why not with me?

im grand. im loving life and where i am in it.

ive been swimming. loads. today i swam 40 laps. it's a funny thing to do, swim laps. i was watching other swimmers while catching my breath for a moment while at the pool today. just standing the the shallow end and watching people swim back and forth and back and forth. i wonder how someone (myself included) can swim like that, back and forth, for 30 minutes or more and not get bored. maybe it's that element of rhythm and chaos. it's beautifully harmonious and never seems monotonous. in any case, ive been swimming laps twice a week consistently since the beginning of the semester and it's been good for me. i feel strong. plus you could bounce a quarter off this ass. that always makes for good feelings too.

nate's super keen on becoming roomies in the soon time. i must admit that i was hesistant at first, but the more i play with the possibility, the more i think he would be like john cusack and i would be like drew barrymore and together we could star in a blockbuster romantic comedy hit about platonic roomie love (???). the silly times would be bountiful and plenty, it's true but i think we would be good roomies to each other in so many wonderful ways. or at least better than last time. im trying, however, to not to get to caught up in possibilities that may not bear fruit. i have an interview for the jet programme next week and if it goes well, i'll be shipped off to japan sometime in late july. understandibly, im hot and cold when it comes to spending a year overseas teaching english in a country im not particularly enamoured by. especially when that year is contracted. harumph. so roomies take 2 may have to be postponed for a while, but i guess i'll have more to say about it come this time next week.

today marks the beginning of reading break and im genuinely looking forward to getting alot of work done during my week off. this is will be the first reading break i havent had visitors or been away somewhere myself. it'll be laura time to the extreme. things sound so much better when they're xtrm.

i kinda like this silly blog as a wee self indulgent and superficial way to write about myself and my feelings. it's a nice vehicle for that.

ljk

it's been a while. it always seems to be a while.

i was thinking about what people usually blog about.
justin - thoughtful music updates, hating work, latest drunken fiasco
mikey - computer/techie business, japanese food stuffs, track
dave - anything photo worthy
me- not blogging<br does happen i get distracted and dont write it down. and so the cycle of no updates continues.

anyways

reading break was fantastic. i explored the big smoke all on my lonesome, did queen street, went to some art galleries, hung out in kensington market and generally enjoyed some well deserved laura time. the definite highlight though was hanging out with my homies. namely myr, anna (andy) and dave. such incredibly amazing people. i was truly broken hearted to miss suda and kate, but next time girls. next time.

oh and fyi, there's nothing to do in waterloo but drink.

in the meantime school has been biting my ass like woah. i was so insanely focused on compiling my JET application that i neglected my courses. i woke up at 4am monday to prepare a 830 presentation for my japanese linguistics class. it went off without a hitch surpringly enough, but i was hooped for the rest of the day. now, i'm not trying to pull the whole "woah is me. im so stressed and busy and ack" because obviously ive done it to myself. i am however reaping the consequences of a slack first half of semester and a wonderful relaxing reading break. in any case, im soooo looking forward to christmas time.

super friends reuinion on the 26th? i think so.
c'est hallowe'en. c'est hallowe'en. hey!

this was the best hallowe'en i've had in years.

i dressed as mia wallace (ie: uma thurman in pulp fiction), complete with black wig, black capris (or nathalie's black dress pants that fit me like capris because she's a 5 foot muffin), white dress shirt, red marker on my chest and caked blood on my nose. i was pretty stoked about the costume, although i truly can't claim it as my own. friend matt suggested it in such a enthusiatic way that i just had to run with it, especially since the effort to sexy ratio is very proportional.
matt and i headed to a house party hosted by 2 of nate's good friends who are just such lovely people (erin - the hostess - made brain and heart cupcakes.. how wickedly martha is that?). everyone was in costume, and there was just such a rad vibe about the whole place. maybe it's because i dont get out very often, but i had sooo much fun. plus, mike ended up coming as vincent vega (ie: john travolta in pulp fiction), which totally made my night. that, and seeing nate dressed as a vagina. a 6'4" vagina. oh dear. many good times were had, and much wine was drank and there was very little hangover to speak of this morning. all tell tale signs of a night well done.

in other news, i'm heading to torona (ie: toronto) on saturday and am so excited i could pee my pants like a little puppy. eeps! in the meantime i'm working like a crazy bitch to help fund the fun for my trip and have a so much work to do i could cry. but i wont, because i'm a big girl and big girls dont cry. we complain and blog about it instead.

ljk
<img width='1' most everyone else's blog everyday, but never seem to post in my own. i guess im not one for exhibitionism or maybe i just have nothing truly blog-worthy to say. i believe it's mostly the latter. really now, does anyone still read this pedestrian drivel? i know i wouldnt.
(what is blog-worthy anyway?)

what happens when you put a bunch of keen linguistics students and communism together? a super nerd linguistics potluck, that's what! saturday was the first and long awaited linguistics super nerd potluck of the season. and what nerdy fun it was! nathan, bless his heart, is soo the life of the party that is life. he stopped by work and offered to tidy my place before people showed. i dont think he knew what he was in for (nathalie and i shed. alot), but it was so awfully sweet of him. the food was fabulous (highlights include mexican sexy soup, beet and sauerkraut delicious pockets and terribly yummy tapioca), the booze was aplenty (baileys + southern comfort = sex - the hangover), and the company was unmatched. oh! and not to forget ben's very keen "chomsky is the bomsky" tshirt which i nearly tore off his body to have as my own.
no title today

some clarification... yes, i did have my nose pierced once before, but only for about two days. the first time i had it pierced with a stud, which i slept on and resulted in being imbedded in my nose and made for a nasty infection and an even nastier scar. this time around it was pierced with a ring, and so far it hasnt given me any grief. i quite like it actually.. it's kinda punky but pretty too. i feel kinda inspired to have my lip down now too... just a wee labret right in the middle. it's so silly, really. i'm in my early-mid twenties... i should be long done with the piercing/body manipulation stage. that was cool in highschool.

i got my haircut yesterday and my bangs are super cute, if i do say so myself. the cut is kinda reminiscent of go-go from kill bill vol. 1. you know, the japanese school girl with the ball and chain thing. what are those things called again? whatever.. i'm happy to look like go-go.. much better than the ashlee simpson thing i had going in the summer. eesh.

so today at work, i got a baloon from a secret admirer! haha! it was just a regualr old baloon with "LAURA" written on one side and "heart, your secret admirer" on the other. i was all giddy about it at first, and then all curious as to who my "secret admirer" was but as it turns it was jonna and alexis (aka i like sexis) -- 2 of my favourite CAs from the summer. haha! that be a lesson: lame-o baloons from pseudo secret admirers make this girl's day.

this weekend is the sub party. i realize that means absolutely nothing to most of you, so let me explain. every year the student society puts of a massive party in student union building (henceforth known as the sub). there's 5 or 6 venues with biggish bands (like wide mouth mason, gob and kyprios) and over 2000 tickets sold. last year's party sold out and i made an absolute killing in tips. doing what? opening beer cans suggestively. hopefully the little clothes to big money ratio wont hold water, since i refuse to hoochie myself up this year. im way too good for that. last year i made almost enough to cover my entire month's rent. i'm hoping this weekend will cover my plane ticket to toronto in november and maybe a cute pair of shoes ive had my eye on for quite some time. either cute shoes and the cure for cancer.. yah.

ljk
<img width='1' height='1' afternoon with kitchen mike and paid a dude good money to stick a metal ring through my nostril. mike also had his belly pierced. quel impulsive day! really though, the belly thing was entirely impulsive.. i had been thinking of nose ring for quite sometime and it was on the list of things to do today.

so yah, i have a hair appointment wednesday and then the life has been more or less an even keel.

oh! wait, i have a rant!

i have a bloody exam tomorrow. how terrible is that? an exam when school hasnt even been in session for 2 weeks. that, my dear friends and devoted readers is terrible. granted it's only worth 10%, but still! the deadline for adding courses isnt even until the 23rd. the whole thing is really quite silly, and im really not in the mood to study. what has happened to my keenly nature? i used to love studying. well, love is a strong word, but i didnt mind it most times. and now.. i just cant be bothered.

hmm. that was quite the lousy rant. this is my cue to hit the hay.

night.
fuck tofino summer 2005

I've decided to name this post as such after justin's "fuck the hurricane tour 2005" posts. really rather insenstive of him, undoubtedly, but i bet he was drunk off his tits and unaware of the devastation in lousiana when the title came to him. i mean that endearingly. justin's drunken antics are just part of his charm. in any case, i feel justified in dubbing this the fuck tofino post for reasons im about to divulge.

k, maybe divulge isnt the verb of choice as i dont really want to get into the grim and gory details. long story short, it was raining the morning we got there, we got into a car accident, the weather wasnt looking up and the moral was at an all time low, so we decided to head 'er back to victoria not even 24 hours later. we didnt even get to surf. but on the bright side, we had booze in our bellies and a bed to sleep in at the end of the day. and really, other than that disasterous weekend, i think it's fair to say dave and i had nothing less than a lovely visit and im really glad he made the trek out. maybe he'll blog about it himself.. he's been itching to blog since may 18th, he just hasnt known what to blog about.

school started today and i couldnt help but think, "shouldnt i be done by now?" my 3 year plan is now 4 and though i considered victoria my home away from home, i wouldnt mind picking up and trying my luck someplace else. im second on the seniority list at felicita's for chrissakes. it's time to move on!<br if i cant remember stuff from just a few months ago, what have i retained in the past 4 years? there's nothing like a deferred exam to get you worrying about early-onset alzheimer's.

man, the week is almost over already.. what's happening to my youth!?

nate came over for dinner last sunday and we had a grand ol' time eating pasta and an entire stinkin' pan of lemon squares i whipped up. gluttonous? maybe, but you would have done the very same had you been there! dont judge me! as is typical when nate and i hang out we ate alot and watched a movie. this time it was 'coming to america' with eddy murphy -- some terrible cheesey 80's comedy (sorry, nate) complete with big hair and shoulder pads. i'd really like to meet the person who introduced shoulder pads to the people of the 80's. really, i wonder if they know they single-handedly defined a decade. what do you think of when you think 80's? i bet you 3 dollars it's shoulder pads. and maybe jem. remember jem? those were the 80's

avast, me hearties!

forget my birthday or christmas, national talk like a pirate day is my new favourite holiday. mark your calendar boys and girls for september 19th... only 44 more sleeps! you can count on me celebrating with some chums and a salty dog.

my frist few days of singledom have been spent a man... my favourite gay man who is also going through a painful breakup. i've seen more of nathan in the past two days than i have all summer. it's been nice. we saw cannibal the musical last night true to it's musical form. how i love the theater! nate's friend michelle played the chief of the french canadian lesbian indian tribe, which as i recall was a tribe of japanese business men in the movie. aside from that one creative readjustment, it was just like the movie and brought back fond memories of that terrible b movie stint in my teenage years. thank goodness it was short lived. there were a couple of dudes in the front row who were being supper rowdy and shouting lude comments throughout the performance. i thought it was intentional because the play was interactive, but apparently they were meth heads. i dont even know one would determine a meth head from any other head but i guess they're easy to spot once you know how. im glad i dont.

and that's all the news that's fit to print.

pipe dreams.. often induced by opium

hi.

okay so it's been a while since i last hopped on the old blog bandwagon. what can i say? (shrugs shoulders) i figured id get another one in there before august rolls around.

so big ben got back in town monday night. we went for a beer tuesday at the canoe club with his friend who's visiting from NY. twas fun despite the fact that ben can be a grumpy curmudgeonly jerkoid sometimes. i mean that endearingly..its part of his charm, if you can believe it. we actually get along quite nicely. he unvited david and i (yes, i got the UNvite) to tofino this weekend and while ive never been and would love to go, the cards have unfortunately not fallen in our favour. which is really too bad.. really. tofino is one place id like to go before i leave this two horse town.

speaking of places id like to go...(quelle segue!)

i got to thinking the other day about how a big fat road trip along the west coast (or left coast if you prefer) to mexico might be something of a good idea seeing as how im living in victoria. i mean, just think of the convenience! im there already! so yah.. im thinking 2 months would cover just about everything. actually, the more i get to thinking about it, the more i just want to forget the honour's thesis, work my ass off slinging beer at the pub and fulfill this pipe dream. of course the legistics are more than just money. for one thing, i'd have to find someone willing to spend two months with me (any takers?), as well buy a reliable automobile. right...

so no hopes up just yet, but let me know if you hear the beaches of mexico calling your name too.

buber pecking

my building reeked of the reefer when i got home from work last night. it was so pungent and yuckey, yet there was a big ol' smile on my face. you smot poking victoria hippies and derelicts... i kinda missed you.

i really like my job, you'll probably hear differently in a couple weeks when im burnt out as all hell, but right now im lapping it up. yesterday was downtown tour and icecream day; then as an evening activity i supervised volleyball. ha! also, the students im responsible for are mostly from different countries so they have to speak english, which means i dont have to be a nazi about it. it strkes me as so odd that the purpose of my position is to "facilitate interaction and english learning". im as dope about language as the next dorky linguist, but something about selling english as fun and cool is unsettling. on the other hand, these students have paid a whack of clams, often at poor exchange rates, to have my shove english down their wee esl throats.

while supervising volleyball last night, i had some downtime to chill with my coworkers who are all very splendid people. splendid. we had a interesting chat about the dimensions of relationships and reasons for marriage and the like. interesting. apparently there's a psychoanalyst by the name of scott peck who believed there are two motivations for marriage. one, the desire for procreation (of course, psychoanalysts are all about the sex) and two, the desire for friction. not the between the sheets kind, but the type of friction that arises when two people are faced with an obstacle. while you may rub each other the wrong way along the way, there's alot of satisfaction in solving a problem with someone by your side. "like pebbles in a bag, they will rub together to smooth each other out" (it's a buddhist monk thing). of course, i dont take credit for contributing this to the conversation. it's just a little bit of wisdom i thought id pass along. we also talked about martin buber, a philosopher who thought there to be 3 kinds of relationships - the i-you, i-thou and i-i. i would go on to explain, but that's what google's for. in any case, buber's a dude.

enough about work and work related business. i'm not a whore to the man afterall.

myriam called yesterday afternoon andn wamred my heart like a bowl full of chilly. so good to hear from that girl.. what a doll. we havent spoken since paul and katie's wedding in december.. crazy! i love that we can just pick up where we left off seven months later. i love that i have people in my life i may speak to regularily but it doesnt make an ounce of difference to our friendship. how rad is that?

it's pretty rad.

i think i need a nap

today was the last day of a 3 day training orientation. day day day. i mostly sat around with a headache and stuffed envelopes. quelle fun. i really shouldnt complain, and i dont mean to, because the next couple weeks look like they'll be alot of fun. for one thing, being the only CA (cultural assistant) for my own program means i'll have 13 students looking only to me as the interface between themselves and canadian culture.. which makes for more responsibilty, but only marginally, and so much more love. it'll be student love x13. also, my class is going on a bunch of daytrips the other classes dont get to partake in that i didnt even have to arrange, like glass blowing, a trip to the cherry hill vineyard and roger's chocolates. i so love the trips that involve samples..

in all honesty, i forgot how exhausting work can be and im trying to stay positive. there's just so much gophering and menial tasks to be done (ie: headache inducing envelope stuffing mentioned above). it seems that everyone who's worked a program earlier this summer is already jaded which makes for bad vibes. ah, sucks to that.. i'll be chipper. hear you me.

there's a CA get-together tonight and im debating whether or not i should go. part of me knows it would be a good way to get to know my coworkers and build friendships, but another part of me is tired, has a headache and is antisocial. what's so bad with being antisocial every so often, anyways?

okay, stop yer complaining.

i promise more light hearted and quirky banter la prochaine fois.

hello west coast

i must have started this blog sometime during finals, and yet this is the first time i've posted. happy birthday to you, blog. it's your first post! (that is, if posts are like birthdays for blogs)

now.. what to write..

im leaving saskatoon tomorrow after a stint of unemployment... intentional unemployment, mind you. you might even call it a holiday. now that it's down to the wire, i think i'd rather stay. i love this city in the summer and i more or less made the most of it while i was here.. enjoying the riverbank, a day trip to waskesiu, the saskatoon zoo (formely known as the forestry farm.. it's a zoo now because they have monkeys! and snow leopards!), bike rides, and sangria at the freehouse. i only regret not catching the children's festival, even though im too big for it (literally), and missing out on beaver creek. really, i couldnt have chosen a worse time to go back to the island.. the weather is starting to perk up nicely and im missing the shows id like to see at the jazz festival by just a hair. ahwell, maybe next year.

so to celebrate my last day in my favourite canadian city, my grandma, mom and i went to see the pirates of penzance, sk at castle theater. twas good, especially if you like gilbert and sullivan which is a strong probabilty if you're over the age of 82; or if you're fond of pirates, like me. i always like chilling with my mom and grandma.. the three generations of women in my family. tonight's plan includes hanging out with paul and katie, my favourite married couple and anyone else who's down. my brother has also invited me to his birthday party.. downstairs. the theme this year is "favourite biblical character". can you guess who he is? is there an adjective that descirbes both creativity and blasphemy? there should be for just such an occasion.

to all of those i'm leaving in saskatoon, you'll be dearly missed and to anyone in vic city, you'll no longer be missed as of tomorrow night.
